San Diego Chapter History

A Brief History of the San Diego Chapter of the Triple X Fraternity

On June 22, 1974, at an impressive Charter Night dinner event at the La Jolla Village Inn, Grand Master Joe Zorigian presented the Charter to the San Diego Chapter and its original members, Joe G. Kellejian, Jerry Tashjian, John Nersesian, Richard Kurkjian, Greg Avedesian, Norman Nouskajian, Ray Saatjian, Alex Matosian, Ed Karagosian, Jr., Jim Abraham, Doug Avazian, George Banerian, Robert Dabaghian, Vartan Khosharian, Jim Magarian, John Marsh, Richard Spanjian and Robert Spanjian.  In addition to sponsoring the new chapter, the Los Angeles Chapter lent many of its members who had moved to the San Diego area to the Fraternity’s southernmost chapter, including its first Master, Bro. Joe G. Kellejian.

The Trex fraternal spirit was soon displayed by the young San Diego Chapter as it accepted the sponsorship of the 1978 Convention, to be held only four years after its inception.  In its early years, as a youthful and energetic Chapter, the San Diego Brothers earned a fine reputation in both the local Armenian and American communities for its many successful events.  Halloween dances and family picnics were typical early events sponsored by the Chapter, and its annual spring Kef Night affairs drew an impressive following throughout the Southern California area.  The Chapter sponsored numerous ski outings both inside and outside of California, where the “Trex Ski Team” was assembled from San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County Brothers.

The San Diego Chapter’s famous Wine and Cheese fundraisers, which continue to the present time, have funded over 100 scholarships to deserving Armenian youth and have displayed the charitable character of the Chapter.

Today, as the San Diego Chapter prepares to celebrate it 50th anniversary, it remains a lively, energetic group committed to the bonds of friendship and our shared Armenian heritage.
